Pulsar Trail 3 LRF XR50 vs XQ50: Which Thermal Scope?
Pulsar's Trail 3 LRF comes in two 50mm versions. The XR50 uses a 640x480, 12-micron sensor with 3-24x magnification. The XQ50 uses a 384x288, 17-micron sensor with 3.5-14x and costs $1,300 less. Both have the same 1,200-meter laser rangefinder, AMOLED display and quick-change battery. The short answer: the XR50 is for open country and long shots, and the XQ50 is the value pick, with the most sensitive sensor in the Trail 3 range.

All figures are from Pulsar's Trail 3 LRF XR50 and XQ50 product pages and spec tables, checked October 17, 2026. Both were listed as purchasable on Pulsar's store that day. Pulsar's launch prices were $4,199.97 (XR50) and $2,999.97 (XQ50).
What's the same
Both scopes share the Trail 3 body: a 50mm objective, an integrated laser rangefinder that reads to 1,200 meters, a 1920x1080 AMOLED display and Pulsar's quick-change LPS7i battery, rated for up to 10 hours and chargeable in the scope or separately over USB-C. Pulsar rates both for rifles producing up to 6,000 joules of muzzle energy, which covers magnum hunting calibers. Pulsar's Trail 3 page also lists bilateral focus wheels, a proximity sensor that shuts the display off when you're not looking, 10 shooting profiles with 10 zero distances each, Wi-Fi with the Stream Vision 2 app, and an operating range of -25 to +50°C.
What's different
Sensor: resolution vs sensitivity
The XR50's 640x480 sensor has 2.8 times as many pixels as the XQ50's 384x288, on a finer 12-micron pitch. That's what you're paying for: more detail when you zoom, and better target ID at distance. The XQ50 has the better NETD figure (under 15 mK vs under 18 mK), and Pulsar calls it the most sensitive sensor in the Trail 3 range. A lower NETD means the sensor resolves smaller temperature differences, which helps in low-contrast conditions such as fog or rain.
Magnification and field of view
The XR50 runs 3-24x and the XQ50 3.5-14x. The XR50 also starts wider at 8.8° (15.4 m at 100 m) against the XQ50's 7.5° (13.1 m), so it's both the better scanner up close and the better reach scope.
Detection range
Pulsar rates the XR50 to detect a heat source at 2,300 m and the XQ50 at 1,800 m. Detection isn't identification, but the gap tells you which scope is built for big fields and pastures.
Price
Pulsar's store lists the XR50 at $4,499.97 and the XQ50 at $3,199.97, a $1,300 difference. Both prices are up $300 from launch.
Which one should you buy?
- Open fields, pastures and longer shots on hogs or coyotes: the XR50, for its 640 sensor, 24x top end and 2,300 m detection.
- Woods, brush and shorter shots: the XQ50. It has the same rangefinder and display for $1,300 less, plus the best sensitivity in the range.
- Bad weather and low thermal contrast: the XQ50's under-15 mK NETD is the better spec.
Either way, hunters protecting land and livestock from hogs and predators now have serious night capability with a built-in rangefinder.
