Best New Ammo of 2026: Picks for Hunting, Suppressed Shooting and the Range
A rifle is only as good as what you feed it. This year's new factory loads include Hornady's 22 Creedmoor line, a new case material, purpose-built subsonics for the $0-tax suppressor era, and long-range hunting bullets with very high ballistic coefficients. We track 11 new ammunition lines for 2026, and 9 of them are confirmed shipping. Here they are by job, with each maker's own velocities and prices.

Key numbers side by side
One representative load per line, as published by the maker. Velocities come from the maker's own test barrels, and the barrel lengths differ, so use these to compare within a line, not as head-to-head tests.

Best for long-range big game
Winchester Supreme Long Range is built around Winchester's BC Max bullet, which Winchester describes as its highest-BC bullet, with a thick-wall jacket, a heat-resistant tip and an extended boattail. It comes in nine cartridges from 6.5 Creedmoor to 300 PRC. The 6.5 Creedmoor 140-grain load (S65BC) is listed at 2,725 fps. Winchester publishes no MSRP, and the last street price we recorded was $41.64.
For a 7mm PRC, Federal's Berger Elite Hunter 195 gr load (P7PRCEH1) uses Berger's 195-grain Elite Hunter at 2,760 fps, with a published BC of .755 and 3,298 ft-lb of energy, at $84.99 per 20. Its .755 BC is the highest published on this list, and it suits hunters who plan for one long shot at elk.
The new idea: a 6.5 Creedmoor that runs faster
Federal's 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak is the most interesting new load of the year. It uses a one-piece Peak Alloy case that Federal rates to 80,000 psi, against 65,000 psi for brass, to push 6.5 Creedmoor about 300 fps faster in existing 6.5 Creedmoor rifles. Federal lists the 130-grain Terminal Ascent at 3,100 fps, and the case is reloadable. The catch is supply: on October 17, Federal's store showed every load "Currently Unavailable" and marked "Available Fall," so it's Listed, no stock. Read the product page before you plan a season around it.
Best for deer
Hornady's American Whitetail TIPPED puts polymer-tipped SST and FTX bullets into Hornady's value deer line, in proven deer-hunting weights. The 30-06 165-grain SST (81151) is listed at 2,900 fps. It's the budget answer for whitetail hunters who want a tipped, fast-expanding bullet instead of a plain soft-point.
The new 22 Creedmoor factory loads also include an 80-grain ELD-X Precision Hunter at 3,285 fps, per launch coverage, for hunters using a 22 Creedmoor on deer where state law allows .22-caliber centerfires. Check your state's caliber rules first. Our 22 Creedmoor vs 22 ARC comparison covers the cartridge.
Best for varmints and predators
Hornady's four 22 Creedmoor loads run from a 69-grain ELD-VT varmint load to an 80-grain ELD Match. Hornady lists the ELD-VT at 3,550 fps from a 24-inch barrel, still carrying 2,412 fps and 892 ft-lb at 500 yards. If you own a Winchester Super Short Magnum, Hornady's 223 WSSM and 243 WSSM Superformance Varmint loads (55-grain and 75-grain V-MAX) bring factory ammo to cartridges that have been hard to feed without handloading.
Best for suppressed and subsonic shooting
With the federal NFA tax on suppressors at $0 since January 1, 2026, and ATF's October 2026 change described in how to buy a suppressor in 2026, more shooters are running cans, and the ammo makers have noticed.
- Barnes Suppressor Series has the widest spread. It uses Sierra bullets in 300 BLK (205-grain GameKing and 220-grain MatchKing at 1,060 fps), 308 Win (205-grain GameKing), 8.6 Blackout (300-grain MatchKing at 1,025 fps) and 9mm (147-grain JHP at 985 fps). The 8.6 BLK 300-grain load has a published G1 BC of .718.
- Federal Subsonic loads heavy Fusion, Fusion Tipped and Target bullets to about 1,000 fps, including a 300 BLK 190-grain Fusion Tipped. It's built to expand at subsonic speed, which makes a quiet rifle a real hunting tool.
- Hornady SBR Suppressed Supersonic goes the other way: supersonic loads with propellants tuned for short, suppressed barrels and less fouling, in 5.56 NATO, 6mm ARC, 300 Blackout and 308 Win, all with ELD Match bullets. It was announced October 14, 2026 as part of Hornady's 2027 line, with no price or ship date yet.
Rule of thumb: pick subsonic when quiet matters most and the range is short. Pick a suppressor-tuned supersonic load when you need trajectory and energy from a short barrel. Browse new suppressors of 2026 for the can itself.
Best for handgun hunting
Federal's Terminal Ascent Handgun brings its bonded, elastomer-filled-nose Terminal Ascent bullet to handguns in nickel-plated cases. Federal lists the 10mm 203-grain (P10TA1) at 1,130 fps, the .357 Magnum 157-grain at 1,410 fps and the .44 Magnum 235-grain at 1,380 fps, at $54.99, $51.99 and $59.99 per 20. On October 17, Federal showed the 10mm available and the .357 and .44 currently unavailable, so check the load you want.
Best for clays
Winchester's AA Super Spreader is a 12-gauge, 2-3/4-inch load at 1,250 fps in 1-1/8 oz and 1 oz of #8 shot. It uses a hinged spreader wad, and Winchester claims patterns 70% larger at 20 yards than standard loads. That helps on close crossers and rabbits at sporting clays. The MSRP is $16.23 per 25 for both loads.
Buying tips
- Match the load to the barrel. Maker velocities come from specific test barrels. Hornady lists different barrel lengths for each SBR Suppressed load. Expect less speed from a shorter barrel.
- Confirm the exact load is in stock. Many of these lines ship some loads while others are "coming soon." Our status covers the line. The product page notes which loads we confirmed.
- Zero with what you'll hunt with. A new bullet and weight will shift your point of impact. Buy enough to zero and confirm at distance.
- Check state hunting rules. Minimum calibers, straight-wall requirements, suppressor hunting and shot rules all vary by state.

How we chose
Every product here comes from our release database, which tracks new products from announcement to shipping. To make the list, a product had to be announced for 2026 (or in late 2025 for 2026 availability) and have a cited maker or trade-press source. We grouped products by job using maker specs, then weighed MSRP and verified shipping status. If two did the same job, we favored the one you can buy today.
We haven't range-tested these products. Picks are editorial judgments based on published data. Prices are maker MSRPs, and status comes from our latest dated check on each product page. Read how we track releases and our editorial standards.
