The 2026 handgun landscape
If you carry, compete or keep a pistol for home defense, 2026 gave you more serious options than any year in recent memory. The headline was GLOCK's 6th Generation: the G17, G19 and G45 Gen6 hit shelves on January 20, 2026 with new ergonomics and a new optic-ready system. Around it, nearly every major maker launched something worth a look, from clean-sheet striker guns (CZ DUTY, Shadow Systems AXIO, SIG P385-Compact) to compensated race-ready carry guns and a new crop of double-stack 1911s. The common thread is that factory optic-readiness is now standard, and compensators are no longer a custom-shop luxury.
Picks by use case
These picks come from our data: published specs, MSRP and verified shipping status. We haven't range-tested them, and we say so. If a pick is only announced, we tell you.
Best all-around duty and home-defense pistol: GLOCK G19 Gen6
The G19 has been the default compact 9mm for decades, and the Gen6 adds a palm-swell frame, a flat-faced trigger and an optic-ready system with three direct-mount plates. It's shipping at a $745 MSRP, and the GLOCK ecosystem of holsters and magazines is unmatched. Want a longer grip with the same slide? The G45 Gen6 pairs a full-size frame with the compact slide.
Best value new pistol: Springfield Echelon Alpha 4.0C
At a $599 MSRP, the Echelon Alpha 4.0C is the most affordable full-featured compact 9mm in our 2026 data, and it's shipping. If you want the full-size grip on the compact slide, the Echelon 4.0FC ($710) is also shipping.
Best new clean-sheet design: CZ DUTY
CZ's DUTY is built on a serialized modular chassis with direct-mount optics and fully ambidextrous controls, in four launch models with or without a manual safety. It's listed at $729 and was announced October 8, 2026. Watch its status before you plan a purchase.
Best for deep concealment: H&K VP9CC or Ruger LCP MAX with ReadyDot
The VP9CC is a 20-ounce micro-compact (per H&K) with a 10+1 flush or 12-round extended capacity and an optics system that seats a dot 40 percent lower. It's announced at a $1,049 MSRP. If you want something smaller and shipping now, the LCP MAX with ReadyDot pairs Ruger's pocket .380 with a battery-free micro reflex sight and a holster that fits with the dot installed, at $449.
Best compensated carry gun: Staccato HD C4X
The HD C4X has a 4-inch barrel with an integrated compensator, runs GLOCK 19-pattern magazines and is shipping from $3,499. For less money, the CANiK METE MC9 Prime Radian ($899.99, shipping) adds a ported barrel and comp to a micro-compact, and the Echelon Pro Comp ($899) brings a compensated slide to the Echelon.
Best premium competition and range pistol: Shadow Systems AXIO or SIG P226-X Agency
The AXIO uses a machined steel chassis and an Overstroke slide system, from $1,999 (announced). The P226-X Agency is a single-action-only, compensated P226 with a factory ROMEO-X optic at $2,849.99. Both are for shooters who want a top-tier gun out of the box.
Best 1911-style pick: Kimber 1911 DS Warrior
A double-stack, optics-ready 1911 made in Troy, Alabama, in 9mm, .38 Super, .45 ACP and 10mm, at a $1,099 MSRP (announced).
Best rimfire trainer: Beretta B22 Jaguar or Taurus TX22 Brace-Ready
Cheap practice makes better shooters. The B22 Jaguar has an aluminum frame, a threaded 5.25-inch barrel and a full-length optics rail ($749, announced). The TX22 Brace-Ready adds a threaded barrel, an optic-ready slide and a brace option ($416.99, announced).
Striker, 1911 or double-stack hybrid?
Striker-fired pistols (GLOCK, Springfield Echelon, CZ DUTY, SIG P385) offer a consistent trigger and simple manual of arms. 1911-pattern guns (Kimber 1911 DS Warrior, Jacob Grey TWC HEX) offer a crisp single-action trigger, and the double-stack versions add capacity. Single-action pistols like the P226-X Agency deliver a match-grade trigger in a duty-proven frame.
Buying tips
Hold it before you buy it: grip fit and trigger reach decide how well you'll shoot a pistol. Make sure holsters exist for the exact model, and budget for an optic, a light and at least three magazines. A brand-new design benefits from a few months of real-world feedback, and our status pills tell you exactly where each gun stands. Then train. The best gun is the one you've practiced with.

How we chose
Every product in this guide comes from our release database, which tracks new products from first announcement to shipping. To make the list, a product had to be announced for the 2026 model year (or announced in late 2025 for 2026 availability) and have a cited maker or trade-press source. We then grouped products by the job they're built for, using the maker's published specs, and weighed manufacturer MSRP and verified shipping status. If two products did the same job, we favored the one you can actually buy today.
We haven't range-tested these products, and we don't claim to have. Our picks are editorial judgments based on published data, and we say when something is only announced. Prices are manufacturer MSRPs from cited sources, and street prices are often lower once a product has been shipping for a while. Status comes from our latest dated check, shown on each product page. Read more about how we track releases and our editorial standards.
Spec comparison
Key specs as published by each maker (from our product detail data). A dash means the maker hasn't published that spec or we haven't recorded it yet.
