The 2026 red dot landscape
Red dots are now standard equipment on fighting pistols and carbines, and 2026's releases focused on durability, battery life and smarter brightness control. Holosun refreshed the 407C and 507C as X3 models, Trijicon added a green 2.5 MOA SRO, EOTech launched the hoodless EXPS3 HD holographic, and Leupold announced the LCO Pro F2 carbine dot.
Picks by use case
These picks are based on maker specs, MSRP and verified status, not torture testing.
Best value pistol dot: Holosun 407C-X3
A 2 MOA dot in the RMR footprint with a 7075 aluminum housing, a side-loading CR1632 battery rated up to 50,000 hours and Shake Awake, per Holosun, from $244.99 and shipping.
Best multi-reticle pistol dot: Holosun 507C-X3
Adds the dot, 32 MOA circle and circle-dot Multi Reticle System plus Solar Failsafe, from $309.99 and shipping.
Best for competition and big dot windows: Trijicon SRO Green Dot 2.5 MOA
The SRO's big window, now with a green 2.5 MOA dot, at $853 (announced May 4, 2026).
Best carbine sight: EOTech EXPS3 HD or Leupold LCO Pro F2
The EXPS3 HD is a hoodless, all-aluminum holographic with a left-side rotary dial, auto-brightness and shake-awake, at $999 (listed). The LCO Pro F2 is Leupold's newest carbine dot, at $899.99 (announced).
Red dot terms that matter
Open vs. closed emitter. An open-emitter dot has an exposed LED that can be blocked by rain, mud or lint. A closed emitter seals it inside the housing. Of the sights here, the EXPS3 HD is a holographic sight, which uses a different technology from LED reflex dots and pairs well with magnifiers.
Battery life and auto-brightness. Holosun rates the 407C-X3 and 507C-X3 at up to 50,000 hours and adds Shake Awake. A forward-facing light sensor adjusts brightness automatically as you move from bright sunlight into a dark room, which is a real advantage on a defensive gun.
Dot size and color. A 2 MOA dot covers about 2 inches at 100 yards, so it's precise for longer shots. A larger dot or circle reticle is faster to find up close. Green dots like the SRO 2.5 MOA green appear brighter to many eyes, and some shooters with astigmatism find them crisper.
Footprints and mounting. The 407C-X3 and 507C-X3 use the widely supported RMR footprint, so they fit many optic-ready slides with the right plate. Direct-mount systems on 2026 pistols like the GLOCK Gen6 and CZ DUTY change how dots attach, so check plate compatibility for your exact gun.
Pistol dots vs. carbine sights
A pistol dot must survive slide recoil and stay small enough to carry, while a carbine sight can be larger, with a bigger window and longer battery life. Holographic sights like the EXPS3 HD are favored on carbines for their large reticle and magnifier compatibility. If you plan to add a magnifier, choose a carbine sight designed for it and mount it at the right height.
How about iron sights? Even with a dot, keep backup irons or suppressor-height sights that co-witness on a pistol. Batteries die, and lenses can get covered.
Buying tips
Match the footprint to your slide or mount. Choose a dot size for your use: smaller for precision, larger for speed. Consider green if you struggle to see red. Use quality screws with proper torque and thread locker, and confirm co-witness with your iron sights. Check battery access, because top-loading or side-loading saves re-zeroing.
What to watch next
Two sights here are still in the announced stage: the Trijicon SRO 2.5 MOA green and the Leupold LCO Pro F2. We'll move them to Shipping when we can confirm stock. Optic makers often show new sights at SHOT Show in January, so expect another wave of announcements around SHOT Show 2027. If you're shopping now, the shipping Holosun X3 models are the safest bet for getting a sight this month. If you're building around a new 2026 pistol, confirm its optic system before you buy. How we chose
Every product in this guide comes from our release database, which tracks new products from first announcement to shipping. To make the list, a product had to be announced for the 2026 model year (or announced in late 2025 for 2026 availability) and have a cited maker or trade-press source. We then grouped products by the job they're built for, using the maker's published specs, and weighed manufacturer MSRP and verified shipping status. If two products did the same job, we favored the one you can actually buy today.
We haven't range-tested these products, and we don't claim to have. Our picks are editorial judgments based on published data, and we say when something is only announced. Prices are manufacturer MSRPs from cited sources, and street prices are often lower once a product has been shipping for a while. Status comes from our latest dated check, shown on each product page.
