The AXR SSP is Palmetto State Armory's new short-stroke piston rifle, replacing what PSA previously showed as the Jakl 2.0. It is bufferless, built on a proprietary ambidextrous lower, and has a swappable-barrel modular upper.
Why it matters
It's PSA's move beyond the AR-15: a piston gun with a folding brace that can run short, which suits suppressors now that the federal NFA tax is $0.
What's new
PSA says none of the AXR guns are based on the AR-15. The SSP drops the buffer tube for a folding brace on a proprietary lower, uses a short-stroke piston and PSA's E4 bolt, and lets you swap barrels, handguards and top rails on one upper.

Specs from: Palmetto State Armory: The AXR Series, GunsAmerica SHOT 2026 report (Jan. 21, 2026). Checked Oct 20, 2026. Where sources disagree we use the maker's figure. Specs the maker has not published are left out. Charging handle, barrel construction and launch calibers are from GunsAmerica's report of PSA's briefing. GunsAmerica gives the 300 Blackout prototype barrel as 6.75 in; we show PSA's own 6.5 in figure.
Status history
- Jan 2026: Announced · source
Shown at SHOT Show 2026. PSA told GunsAmerica these are early prototypes, that pricing has not been announced and that it is targeting Q4 2026 if development stays on track. On Oct. 20, 2026 we found no PSA product listing or price.
Who it's for: Shooters who want a compact, piston-driven 300 Blackout or 5.56 carbine for suppressed use, and who can wait for launch.
Is it worth it?
Not for sale yet, and PSA calls the guns early prototypes. If you want a 5.56 you can buy today, see our new AR-15s of 2026, or read how the $0 tax changes things in how to buy a suppressor in 2026.
