9mm Ammo 2026: Self-Defense, Range and Subsonic Loads From the Makers
We checked 23 current 9mm Luger loads from Federal, Speer, Remington and Hornady on their own product pages on November 1, 2026. Every bullet weight, velocity, energy figure, test barrel and status below is copied from the maker's page. We group the loads by the use the maker itself lists. We don't use retailer prices, third-party ballistics or gel-test results. This is a comparison of popular loads, not every 9mm load sold.

Hornady loads

JHP means jacketed hollow point, HP hollow point and FMJ full metal jacket. Velocity and energy are the muzzle figures in each maker's ballistics table. "Box" is the round count the maker lists per box. Status is the maker's own wording on its product page, and it can change daily. All pages checked November 1, 2026.
115 vs 124 vs 147 grain: what the makers' numbers show
Federal's American Eagle FMJ line gives the cleanest comparison, because all three loads use the same bullet style and a 4-inch test barrel. Federal lists the 115 gr at 1,180 fps and 356 ft-lb, the 124 gr at 1,150 fps and 364 ft-lb, and the 147 gr at 1,000 fps and 326 ft-lb. Speer's Gold Dot shows the same pattern: 1,210 fps for 115 gr, 1,150 fps for 124 gr and 985 fps for 147 gr. Heavier bullets leave slower in every maker line we checked. None of these pages make a claim about how one weight performs in a target over another, and we don't either. Pick a load your pistol runs reliably, and practice with a range load of similar weight.
What +P means
SAAMI, the industry body that sets voluntary ammunition standards, lists a maximum average pressure of 35,000 psi for 9mm Luger and 38,500 psi for 9mm Luger +P in its centerfire pistol standard (Z299.3-2022). SAAMI says +P ammunition "is loaded to a higher pressure, as indicated by the +P marking on the case headstamp, to achieve higher velocity," and should be used "only in firearms especially designed for this cartridge and so recommended by the manufacturer." Check your pistol's manual before you buy +P.
The +P loads in our tables are Federal HST P9HST3S, Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 23611GD and Hornady Critical Duty 90226. Federal's +P HST lists 1,200 fps from a 4-inch barrel, 50 fps more than its standard-pressure 124 gr HST (P9HST1S).
Short barrels and test barrel length
Muzzle velocity depends on barrel length, so compare loads tested on the same barrel. Federal, Speer and Hornady list a 4-inch test barrel for the loads above, except Speer's Gold Dot Short Barrel (23611GD), which Speer lists from a 3.5-inch barrel. Remington's handgun pages don't list a test barrel length. If you carry a micro-compact, your velocities will likely differ from the box. See new micro-compact pistols of 2026 for barrel lengths by model.
Subsonic and suppressed shooting
Hornady sells 90287 as "Subsonic" and lists it at 975 fps from a 4-inch barrel. Several 147 gr loads in our tables run at a similar speed: Speer Gold Dot 147 gr at 985 fps and Federal's 147 gr HST and American Eagle at 1,000 fps. Only Hornady labels its load subsonic on these pages. Barnes also has a subsonic Suppressor Series, covered on our Barnes Suppressor Series page. We couldn't read Barnes's 9mm spec tab, so it's not in the tables. Shooting suppressed? Start with new suppressors of 2026 and how to buy a suppressor.
Safety note: Winchester 9mm 115 gr recall
Winchester has an amended recall notice for certain lots of 9mm Luger 115 grain FMJ and JHP ammunition under the symbols Q4172, RED9, USA9JHP, USA9MMVP, USA9W and WW9B. Winchester says the recalled lots "may contain propellant that does not properly ignite and burn when the cartridge is fired," which may leave a bullet stuck in the barrel. Winchester says ammunition of those symbols bought before March 25, 2021 is not subject to the recall. Only the lot numbers on Winchester's page are affected, so check your box against the Winchester recall notice or call Winchester at 844-653-8358. We didn't include Winchester loads in our tables because their spec pages didn't show ballistics data when we checked.

Where to buy
We link only to maker pages, listed in the sources below. Federal, Speer and Remington show availability on their own product pages. Hornady's pages don't. We don't track retailer stock or prices. Before you order, check your state's ammunition rules, because some states require a background check or restrict shipping.
