Staccato HD C4X vs HD P4X: Carry Gun or Duty Gun?
Staccato built the HD P4X by taking the C4X's integrated-compensator top end and putting it on a full-size steel frame. So the two pistols share a barrel, a slide length and an optics system, and differ almost entirely below the slide. The short answer: the C4X is the carry gun and the P4X is the duty and home gun. Here's the detail, all from Staccato's own spec sheets.

What's the same
More than you might think. Both guns use the same one-piece 4.0-inch barrel with an integral compensator, which is the whole point of the "X" in the name: flatter shooting without a separate comp to come loose. Both share the 3.6-inch fully captive flat-wire recoil system, the 4-4.5 lb single-action trigger, the HOST optic mounting system with spacer plates, the 7.6-inch overall length and the 1.2-inch grip width. Both are fully ambidextrous, with dual safeties, dual slide stops and a reversible magazine catch, and both carry the HD line's active firing pin block. Both are made in the USA.
That means a holster cut for the slide and optic of one is a reasonable starting point for the other, but check fit with your holster maker, since the grip and frame differ.
What's different
Frame material and weight
This is the big one. The C4X frame is 7075 aluminum, and the gun weighs 24.5 oz without a magazine. The P4X frame is 4140 steel, and it weighs 32.5 oz. That's an 8-ounce difference, roughly a third more gun. Staccato says the steel adds mass "where duty demands it," for recoil absorption and stability on follow-up shots. On the belt all day, those 8 ounces are what you'll feel.
Grip length and capacity
The C4X uses the HD Compact grip: 4.84 inches tall, 15+1, and compatible with most Glock 19-size magazines per Staccato. The P4X uses the full-size HD grip: 5.5 inches tall, 18+1, and compatible with most Glock 17-size magazines. That extra 0.66 inch of grip is the part that prints under a shirt, and it's also the part that gives you a full firing grip and three more rounds.
Price
The P4X runs $100 more at every trim level. Core is $3,499 vs $3,599. The Preferred package adds a Trijicon tritium front night sight, a magwell and a third magazine on both guns.
Which one should you buy?
- Concealed carry, every day: the C4X. It's lighter by 8 ounces and shorter in the grip, which are the two things that decide whether you actually carry a gun. Staccato itself calls it the carry pistol.
- Duty belt, patrol or security work: the P4X. Staccato designed it for "duty belt, patrol, and professional deployment," and the steel frame and 18-round capacity are what a duty gun wants.
- Home defense: the P4X. Weight doesn't matter on a nightstand, and three more rounds and more mass for recoil control do.
- Competition and range: the P4X, for the same reason. A heavier gun with a comp tracks flatter.
- One gun for everything: if you'll carry it concealed even some of the time, the C4X. If it will mostly ride in an open holster, the P4X.
Either way, you're buying a lifetime-warranty, American-made 2011 with a comp, ambi controls and a direct-mount optic system. There isn't a wrong answer here, just a right one for how you carry.
