M&P Metal HD vs Competitor HD: Which Steel-Frame M&P Should You Buy?

Smith & Wesson launched both on January 15, 2026, as the M&P Metal HD Series: M&P9 M2.0 pistols on a stainless-steel frame. They share the frame, the 5-inch barrel, the 17-round magazine and the flat-face trigger. The Metal HD ($1,149) is the duty and home-defense version with Night Fision tritium sights. The Performance Center Competitor HD ($1,299) is the race gun: a spiral-fluted barrel, a lightened slide, an external magwell and a HIVIZ front sight. Here's what the $150 buys.

Specs, SKUs and MSRPs from Smith & Wesson's product pages for SKU 14670 and SKU 14068 (rendered in a browser on October 21, 2026), plus S&W's January 15, 2026 launch release as published by AmmoLand for length and optics. S&W's figures are its own; we haven't weighed or measured either pistol.

What's the same

Both are full-size 9mm M&P M2.0 pistols on a stainless-steel frame with S&W's new grip texture, a 5-inch 1:10-twist barrel and a flat-face trigger. S&W's launch release says both use its C.O.R.E. optics-ready system, have a Picatinny-style accessory rail and come with four interchangeable palmswell inserts, and both are offered with or without a thumb safety and in 10-round compliant versions. Both were shipping at retailers in our October checks.

What's different

Barrel and slide

The Competitor HD's barrel is spiral-fluted, and its slide has lightening cuts and deeper serrations. S&W says the changes help reduce felt recoil. They also take weight off: the Competitor is 34.5 oz empty, 0.4 oz lighter than the Metal HD's 34.9 oz.

Sights

Both front sights glow in the dark. The Metal HD uses a Night Fision tritium front sight. The Competitor HD's HIVIZ front adds a fiber-optic insert to the tritium, which gathers daylight on a match stage. Both use the same blacked-out U-notch rear.

Reloads

The Competitor HD adds an external magwell and an extended magazine release for faster reloads. The magwell is why it's wider and taller on S&W's spec sheet: 1.67 inches wide and 5.8 inches tall, against 1.3 and 5.5 inches for the Metal HD.

Price and magazines

S&W lists the Metal HD at $1,149 and the Competitor HD at $1,299. S&W's Competitor HD page says it ships with four 17-round magazines, while the Metal HD ships with two. S&W's January launch release said two for both, so confirm the box contents with your dealer.
