Taurus TX9 vs Glock 17 Gen 6: Budget Duty Gun or the Standard?
The Glock 17 is Glock's original full-size 9mm, and Gen 6 is its newest version. The Taurus TX9 is Taurus's first purpose-built duty pistol. It's built on a serialized chassis that swaps between three grip sizes, at a $499.99 MSRP. Both are shipping now. Here's how the full-size TX9 stacks up against the G17 Gen 6 on each maker's own spec sheet.
The short version
- Same capacity: both are 17+1 in full-size form.
- Nearly the same size: the TX9 Full has a 4.5-inch barrel and is 7.75 in long. The G17 Gen 6 has a 4.49-inch barrel and is 7.95 in long.
- Modularity: the TX9's serialized chassis moves between full-size, compact and subcompact frames. The Glock's serialized part is its frame.
- Sights: the TX9 uses industry-standard dovetails with a removable white-dot front and a drift-adjustable rear. Glock lists polymer sights.
- Price: Taurus lists $499.99. Gen 6 Glocks were reported at $745, a $245 gap.

Size and weight
On paper these are close: same capacity, essentially the same barrel, and the TX9 is 0.2 in shorter and 0.27 in lower. The weights aren't measured the same way. Taurus lists the TX9 Full at 25 oz unloaded, and Glock lists the G17 Gen 6 at 600 g (21.16 oz) without a magazine. Taurus lists the TX9's frame material as stainless steel.
Modularity: one chassis, three sizes
This is the TX9's headline. Taurus calls it the Taurus Modular System, a serialized chassis that lets you "quickly swap frame sizes between the full size, compact, and subcompact." Per Taurus's launch details, the compact has a 4.0-inch barrel and 15 rounds, and the subcompact has a 3.4-inch barrel and 13 rounds. All three sizes carry the same $499.99 MSRP. With a Glock, you buy a separate G19 or G26 for a different size. The TX9 Full also includes two magazines, four interchangeable backstraps, an ambidextrous slide release and a reversible magazine catch.
Sights and optics
Taurus uses industry-standard dovetails for the TX9's irons, "readily accepting many aftermarket options," and it's optics-ready through Taurus's T.O.R.O. system. Glock's Gen 6 moves to three included plates that let optics screw directly into the slide. Glock's ergonomic changes for Gen 6 are a palm swell, an extended thumb rest, an enlarged beavertail and an undercut trigger guard.
Track record
The G17 design has decades of duty use behind it. Guns.com reports Gen 6 still takes Gen 3, 4 and 5 double-stack 9mm magazines, and holster and parts support is widespread. The TX9 is new for 2026, so its long-term record is still being written. That's not a knock on the gun, just a fact to weigh if it's going on duty. If you're buying for work, check your agency's approved-weapons list before you buy either one.

Which should you buy?
Buy the Taurus TX9 if value and versatility matter most. At $499.99 you get a full-size duty pistol, two magazines, dovetailed sights and a chassis that can become a compact or subcompact later.
Buy the Glock 17 Gen 6 if you want the proven standard. It's lighter, has decades of duty history, some of the widest holster and magazine support of any 9mm, and Gen 6's improved grip and direct optic mounting.
Either way, an affordable, capable sidearm in a citizen's hands is the Second Amendment working as intended. See also the Glock Gen 6 vs Gen 5 comparison and our new 9mm pistols of 2026.
